10 Things That Can Cancel Fasting and Other macrooh Things
For Muslims, fasting during the month of Ramadan is obligatory. Fasting does not mean just not eating and drinking because in this holy month we are asked to restrain all kinds of things related to our passions as humans.
If we can’t contain these desires, our fasting will be canceled and we have to replace the broken fast in this month of Ramadan with fasting in another month. To better understand, here are 10 things that break the fast.
Things That Cancel Fasting and Other macrooh Things
As explained above, fasting does not mean only not eating and drinking. We also have to keep away from things that can invalidate the fast, reduce the reward of fasting, and things that are macrooh (not break the fast, but do not get an additional reward when done) to do while fasting during the month of Ramadan. The following is a list of things that can break your fast.
1. Inserting something into the body orifices on purpose
A person’s fast is declared invalid when an object enters one of the holes originating in the internal organs and has entered the throat. In terms of fiqh it is called jauf and which includes the body openings are the mouth, ears and nose. Then the entry process is based on the factor of self-intention. This fast does not become invalid when the object has not entered the throat.
2. Treatment by inserting drugs into body parts
The thing that invalidates the next fast is treatment by inserting objects or drugs in one of two ways, namely the mouth and the anus. For example, people who suffer from hemorrhoids or sick people who need to have a urinary catheter inserted. Treatment of these two diseases through the process of inserting something into the body that can break the fast.
3. Experiencing menstruation or postpartum while fasting
For women, fasting is declared invalid if they are menstruating or postpartum. Women who are in a postpartum condition are also not allowed to pray. Fasting that is abandoned due to menstruation must be replaced with another day. This is different from prayer because the prayer that is left behind because of menstruation is not required to make up the prayer.
4. Intentional vomiting
Discharge from the mouth or vomiting can also cause a person’s fast to be invalidated. However, this condition is still under certain considerations. Fasting becomes invalid if vomiting is done intentionally. Unintentional vomiting due to illness does not invalidate the fast.
5. Taste the food
Tasting food while cooking can also break the fast because someone has indirectly tasted something from the food. Even after being thrown back, we don’t know if there are droplets of food that are swallowed along with the saliva. However, some scholars say that tasting food while fasting is macrooh.
6. Brushing teeth
Fasting all day will usually make our mouths have a bad odor. Therefore, brushing your teeth with toothpaste can help get rid of the bad odor. So can brushing your teeth make your fast invalid?
This is still a matter of debate among scholars. Some scholars say that brushing teeth with toothpaste is macrooh and can break the fast, especially after the time of midday (dzuhur) to Asr.
7. Smoking
Even if you don’t swallow something directly into your throat, smoking can still break your fast. The sweet taste in the filter is considered to be able to break the fast. In addition, the effects of smoking which can override hunger and thirst are also the cause of smoking which can invalidate fasting.
8. Swimming
Swimming is actually not forbidden when fasting. However, it is very likely that water will be swallowed while swimming and enter our bodies. Therefore, just in case it is better not to swim first while fasting.
9. Have sex
As mentioned above, fasting means having to restrain one’s lust. Not only eating and drinking, but also sexual desire. A person who has sexual intercourse while fasting will definitely break his fast. He is also required to pay a fine for his actions.
The fine is that you are required to fast for two consecutive months or to provide staple food worth 0.6 kg of rice to 60 poor people in the same period.
10. Excess emotions
Same as above. Overflowing emotions or anger when fasting is a sign that the person can’t contain his lust. Therefore, his fast will be immediately invalidated when he releases his anger. If that person continues his fast, that person will only endure hunger and thirst without getting the reward of his fast.
Does crying break the fast?
Excessive emotions can indeed break the fast, but is it crying?
Many say that crying can break the fast because crying is an expression of excessive emotion. However, citing various sources, crying while fasting is legal and does not break the fast.
Why? Because crying can be caused by many things, ranging from happy, sad, and angry. But remember, excessive crying is still not allowed.
Those are some things that can make a person’s fast invalid. After reading the article above, hopefully you can better understand what things can break the fast in the month of Ramadan later and can carry out fasting worship smoothly. Happy fasting
