Muslimcreed – The tongue is boneless. This parable is intended to remind people to guard their words. For example namimah (النمیمه), which is to mention someone’s words to others with the intention of damaging the relationship between the two.
Ustadz Ainul Yaqin added that in essence there are three namimah characters, namely:
– Delivering news with the aim of playing against each other.
– Delivering true news, but not accompanied by the purpose of playing against each other. However, it is actually inappropriate to convey because it will cause inconvenience to others.
– A form of namimah that conveys false news or makes up stories, in the name of the truth and disseminated to others with the aim of playing against each other, or damaging social or personal situations.
Definition of Namimah
Namimah (putting against each other) or Nammami (Arabic: النمیمه) is one of the major sins which means to mention one person’s words to another with the intention of destroying their friendship.
Namimah is one of the verbal sins that is highly rebuked in the Qur’an and hadith. This act is usually in conjunction with other bad morals such as backbiting, slander, and envy. It is explained, the occurrence of murder, humiliation, and the disclosure of disgrace are among the consequences in this world and being kept away from heaven among the consequences in the hereafter.
Namimah means to mention one person’s words to another with the intention of destroying their friendship. However, namimah is not limited only to speech, but also includes delivery in the form of writing and signs. Revealing some issues that people don’t want others to know about is also called namimah.
A person who intends to destroy one’s friendship, by mentioning one’s words to another in a seditious manner, is called nammam. In many cases, namimah is often accompanied by revealing secrets, slander, hypocrisy, lust, lies and backbiting. In the Indonesian language, Namimah is commonly referred to as fighting sheep, gossiping, hate speech, and spreading slander.
Difference between Namimah and Si’ayah
Si’ayah is a form of namimah. Mentioning one’s words to others who he is afraid of (like the king) is called si’ayah. Al-Naraqi considers si’ayah as the worst namima and considers his faults to be greater than other types of namima. He believed that si’father came from greed and envy.
Sources and Factors Causing Namimah
Al-Naraqi mentions the source of namimah is anger and lust. In some moral books, it is stated that the reasons or motives for a person to tend to namimah are as follows:
– Wants to harm someone whose words are reported.
– It’s nice when someone conveys what other people say to him.
– As entertainment and fun.
– Likes someone who talks nonsense.
– Intends to divide.
– Malice.
Influence and Consequences of Namimah
Because of the dangers of namimah’s actions in society, Yahya bin Abi Katsir said that namimah is more dangerous than magic because namimah can damage human relations in a short time with only words. According to the Prophet Muhammad himself, this act of namimah will get a very painful torment in the grave, but not many realize that they have done this act of namimah or fighting.
In the history mentioned a number of bad consequences of namimah, including the following:
1. The Doom of the Grave
2. Keep away from Heaven
3. Acts whose perpetrators are reproached by Allah SWT
4. Prayers are not answered
5. Humiliation and Disgrace
6. Gives birth to hatred and division
How to Prevent Namimah’s Actions
The way to prevent namimah is to leave the trigger, such as hasad (envy) and revenge. Likewise, remembering the bad consequences of namimah in the world and the hereafter which have been described in existing narrations, can be used as a solution to recover from the habit of doing namimah.
