ETHICS TOWARDS PEOPLE WHO WILL DIE

Among the ethics of dealing with people who are nearing death are:

1. If there are signs of death, it is recommended that the sick person be laid to the right facing the Qiblah like the position of a corpse in a grave. If it is difficult, then I will not mind lying on the left while his face and body are still facing the Qibla.

If it is difficult to lie down, then there is nothing wrong with his body lying on his back with the position of his face and the soles of his feet facing the direction of the Qiblah, then support his head so that it is in a higher position and so that his face can face the Qiblah.

2. Then it is recommended to guide the person who will die by saying لاإله لاالله but not continuously because it is feared that the person who will die feels bored just once if the person who will die has said it. If the person he is guiding has said it, but if he hasn’t said it, then we repeat it again until the person he is guiding says the word لاإله لا الله.

But don’t say “read lafadلاإله لا الله” because it will hurt people who will die. Those who have said it do not repeat it unless the person being guided says other than the word لاإله لاالله then guided again by saying لاإله لا الله so that the end is the word لاإله لاالله.

Because there is a hadith: “Whoever ends his sentence with the words لاإله لاالله will enter heaven full of happiness”. But even when he is about to die, he does not say the word لاإله لاالله as long as he believes in Allah and is a Muslim, then he will still go to heaven.

As for the benefits, it is recommended to say the word لاإله لاالله in order to get a reward by reading it. The most important person who will guide him is not his heirs or enemies or people who are jealous of people who are about to die. It is feared that there will be an impression of pushing to die quickly. But if no one else does this, then prioritize the heirs who are most dear to the person who will die.

But if the person who will die is a poor person, then the heir who wants to guide him does not need the person who loves him the most because he is not worried that there will be an impression of pushing him to die quickly because he wants his inheritance.

Then strive for those who are guided and who guide them and who attend those who will die in a pure state, namely having ablution and not carrying unclean. Because the angel Gabriel will be present and bring mercy to those who are dying who are in a holy condition so that it is easy to let go of their lives and they are saved from the temptations of Satan.

So according to Ibn Hajar, it is forbidden for a wife who is menstruating or postpartum to attend a person who is about to die because it is feared that it will prevent the arrival of the angel Gabriel. Although according to the book Albujairomi ‘AlalKhotib, the strongest opinion is that it is not advisable for a wife who is menstruating or postpartum to attend a dying person.

3. It is recommended that near people who are about to die read Yasin’s letter aloud. Because there is an explanation of the hadith “Indeed people who are nearing death if Yasin is read, they will die with a heart full of peace and enter their graves with a heart filled with peace”.

And it is recommended to read the letter ar-ro’du slowly, because it will be the cause of alleviating death and facilitating the release of the spirit. If you are going to read one of them then look at the condition of the person who is dying, if you are still aware and remember the condition of waking up from the grave then read Surah Yasin, but if it is not like that then read Surat Ar-Ro’du.

The characteristics of a person who is happy when he dies are his forehead sweats, his tears flow, his nostrils expand. Because there is an explanation of the hadith: “Pay close attention to the condition of the corpse at the time of death, if his forehead sweats, tears flow, his nostrils expand, then Allah’s mercy has come down on him.

But if he makes a sound like a choking calf, or his skin turns blue, or foams in his mouth, then God’s punishment has come upon him.”
