Muslimcreed – In order to maintain our health and keep fit, we engage in various forms of sports and exercises, some of which are designed to be more vigorous than others. We need to remember that according to the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the scope of sport and exercise can be broader than we realize. Therefore, engaging in activities that are considered sunnah or supererogatory can confer many health benefits beyond what we might first think of—not only physical health but also mental health as well.
Archery
The prophet Muhammad was an avid sportsman, and he taught that there were many benefits to be gained from playing sports. Archery was one of his favorite sunnah sports, and he encouraged people to take up the sport to improve their strength, dexterity, and accuracy. He said If anyone among you is good at archery, then let him compete in it.
He believed that archery had such a wide range of benefits that it could help anyone who practiced it, regardless of whether they were strong or weak. He encouraged those who were strong to compete in archery with other sportsmen and said Whoever among you is good at shooting arrows, let him shoot them well, for there is reward (thawab) for whoever competes in archery or indeed any other competition. It was his belief that people should not think they were too old to begin playing sports just because they were past adolescence; he said When one-third or more than one-third (of your life has passed), then compete with one another in shooting arrows and whoever hits the target (has qadar) wins.
Horse riding
The Prophet Muhammad taught that horse riding was a sunnah sport and had many benefits. Horse riding helps to develop balance, coordination, and strength. It also teaches discipline and responsibility. Horse riding can also be a great form of relaxation and stress relief.
It’s also believed that horse riding can help reduce stress and mental fatigue, which may be why people often find it so enjoyable. A study from Purdue University found that riding horses helped elderly women to improve their focus and attention span. There are a number of other benefits you can gain from horse riding, including increased cardiovascular endurance, weight loss, enhanced immune system function, stronger bones and better posture. Another benefit is increased self-confidence and self-esteem. When you’re in control of a powerful animal such as a horse, it can boost your confidence levels. Being in control or even just pretending to be in control is an important factor in building confidence and decreasing anxiety.
Swimming
There are many benefits to swimming, especially when it comes to Sunnah sports. Swimming is a great way to stay fit and healthy, and it can also be a fun way to relax and enjoy the outdoors. The Prophet Muhammad taught that swimming is a Sunnah sport, and he encouraged people to engage in it for its many benefits. Swimming is a great way to exercise, and it is also an excellent way to cool off on hot days. In addition, swimming can help improve your mental health and well-being.
Some individuals may be concerned about practicing swimming in public due to concerns about displaying their bodies. The Prophet Muhammad encouraged modesty and respecting others, which can be followed when practicing swimming. It’s important to wear clothing that is appropriate for wearing in public when going swimming. In addition, it’s also a good idea to avoid going out alone if possible, especially if you feel uncomfortable doing so. If you do go swimming with friends or family members, then consider using a swimsuit that provides extra coverage for your body and allows you to still have fun and enjoy being outdoors.
