Islam teaches that a woman should share her external beauty only with her husband and to a lesser extent with her mahārim and not with every man on the street. The concept of wearing hijab however has evolved with time and its importance style and use varies according to the cultural.

The meaning of khimar and the context in which the verse was revealed clearly talks about concealing the head and then using the loose ends of the scarf to conceal the neck and the bosom.

In fact the concept of hijab is very ancient and although not always called as hijab but the concept of women covering their bodies in some way or the other in Islam dates back to the 6th Century when the religion was first introduced and started spreading.

Women in the past used to cover their heads with the khimar throwing its ends over their backs. Of khimar refers to a cloth which covers the head ears hair neck and bosom. According to the Quran they must draw their khimar over their bosoms and keep themselves covered.

While hijab means cover drape or partition the word khimar means veil covering the head and the word litham or niqab means veil covering the lower face up to the eyes. True Islam is derived from the Quran and not from the traditions or cultures of Muslim people. Women in the past used to cover their heads with the khimar throwing its ends over their backs.

The Khimar according to its original meaning of womens liberation and as a symbol of their participation along with men in the socio-political space was therefore gradually replaced by the other Quranic concept of Hijab to prevent women from participating in the social field. The concept of hijab and Khimar is not very new and goes back many years.
