Love for Allah grows from the seeds of faith that are in the garden of the heart. If the seed has grown, of course we must fertilize and water it. Cultivate it with faith and continue to sharpen the heart to get closer to Allah.

The process of cultivating love for Allah is like our love for creatures. That’s how it is when we beg for God’s love. Doing what He likes, not doing what He hates. In essence, we seek God’s attention by doing godliness.

There are stages that we can take to be consistent in walking the path of loving Allah;

The first is Mu’ahadah. We promise to have faith and love only Allah. The promise is needed so that we commit to what we say. Like someone expressing love to the person he loves.

If spoken, in his heart will grow a sense of belonging. The same is true when we make a promise to God. If we violate, of course we will feel guilty and will not betray our promise.

Ibn Athaillah in the book Al-Hikam explains, the perfect believer is a believer who is always preoccupied with praising the beautiful qualities of Allah SWT so that he is not proud of his good qualities.

Believers are also busy fulfilling their obligations to Allah SWT so that they no longer remember their own interests. According to Ibn Athaillah’s view, a true believer will not attribute the good deeds and mental conditions he experiences to himself and never look at himself or glorify him.

The second is Mu’aqabah. Sanction yourself for your negligence. When we are in love with a creature, there are times when he doesn’t like what we do. So it is with God.

Of course, Allah does not like it when we commit negligence and sinful acts that we commit. For example, skipping the obligatory prayer times. When we miss prayer time, do we get a direct punishment from Allah? Of course not. But the angels record it to be reckoned with in the afterlife. =

As people who claim to love Allah with the mu’ahadah or promises we make, we should know ourselves that skipping prayer times is a big mistake.

Can you confess your love but miss your promise to meet him? Therefore, so that it does not happen again, we do self-awareness. Namely by being firm with ourselves in the form of setting sanctions that we must run.

For example, we make our own rules. If you miss the obligatory prayers, I promise to punish myself by giving more alms. Keep it up.

Until we are consistent not to miss the obligatory prayers. Because by itself, people who are consistent with the obligatory prayers, he will feel that something is missing when the obligatory prayers are missed.

The third is muhasabah. Always evaluate yourself. By studying the space of our hearts. Like caring for a garden, of course we always check the condition of the soil, the plants, and the grass that grows wild around it.

So it is with our hearts. We examine, whether the condition of his faith is going up or down? Are there pests that interfere with the plant of love for Allah, in the form of heart diseases such as envy, envy, revenge, and so on. By frequently examining the garden of our hearts, with meditation, we will continue to be careful to guard our love for Allah.

Fourth is Muraqabah. Try to get closer to God. When we are attracted to someone, then the seeds of love grow, don’t we seek attention and try to make an approach?

In this case, we try to get closer to Allah by doing all the good that He likes. There are many ways we can do this approach. It is very clearly stated in His love letter that reaches us, namely the Koran. In his letters, he tells us about all the good things He loves.

One way that brings us closer to Allah is by remembering Allah or making dhikr. Remembering Allah, not limited by time and place, we can do it every day. That is the most important and easiest way we do as a means to draw closer to Allah.

If we love Allah and occupy our hearts with remembrance of Him, then surely He will remember us. It’s different when we occupy our hearts with someone, that person doesn’t necessarily remember us.

Fifth is Mujahadah. Be serious in doing good that will make us loved by Him. Our faith always goes up and down. Therefore, whatever the condition of our faith, we must really strengthen ourselves to do good so that our position remains with Allah.

When our hearts are dry and negligent, then immediately treat it by reading the Koran, increasing the sunnah prayers, getting up at night for the tahajjud prayer, doing a lot of sunnah fasting and also giving alms often.
