Question:
There is a question about the problem of reading after Surah al-Fatihah whether when we pray the obligatory prayers are recommended to read the long surah or when we pray the Sunnah, we are encouraged to read the short surahs?
Answer:
If we try to see how the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam prayed perfectly, we will meet him while praying after reading Surah al-Fatihah which is a pillar of prayer, so sometimes he is conditional.
When he was an Imam he was very conditional to see his congregation, When they were people who were ready in terms of the strength of their faith and also their physical strength, he sometimes read quite long letters.
In addition, he also pays attention to the condition of the congregation who may be in need of time or for example there are parents or there is a mother carrying her child and then her child cries, so she sometimes reads a short letter in the obligatory prayers.
As for the sunnah prayer, the Prophet sallallaahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam said in a hadith: when we do the sunnah prayer, the prophet says read a long reading or letter according to what we want the hadith narrated by Imam Bukhari and Muslim
This shows that when we pray sunnah it is recommended that we lengthen our reading, because when we are praying sunnah we have no bond with the congregation. If we are Imams or when we are Makmum, we will not be left behind by our Imams if we read long letters.
As well as. This problem was also alluded to by Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala in the 20th verse of the letter Muzammil
Maybe this is an advice for all of us when we do the fardhu prayers, especially if as Imams sometimes we are long, but if it is our turn to pray alone, we pray Sunnah we tend to choose short letters.
